Erdon Lee
荔枝王/恐龍蛋
A mid-to-late season lychee prized for its large fruit, deep red and purple colour and distinctive wrinkled skin. Grown on a sprawling, medium-to-large tree.
Trivia
Its name Erdon Lee is a direct transliteration from 鹅蛋荔 (goose egg) which is actually a different variety also known for its enormous size. The actual Chinese origin is 紫娘喜 which translates to "a purple lovable lady".
Bai Tai Ying
白糖罂
One of our earliest lychees to ripen, with thin bright red skin and crisp, waxy-white flesh. Its sweetness in the purest form earned its Chinese name meaning "a jar of white sugar". It is also prized for the small seeds which makes it even more popular amongst customers.
Did you know?
Baitaiying is the OG of lychees and in Gaozhou (高州) China there is a 1300 year old tree that is still bearing fruits. This photo is of a "younger" tree standing at 800 years of age. Not really that young, is it?
Kaimana
Diamond, a jewel of a lychee
A highly sought after lychee variety as it offers a rare combination of great sweetness, large size, small seed and a strong fruity aroma. Hidden underneath its thin smooth skin is its crisp juicy flesh.
Origin
It is a unique variety selected and bred from a Hak Ip (黑叶) seedling at the Haiwaii Agricultural Experiment Station. It received its official name meaning "diamond" in the local language in 1982 which is the diamond anniversary of the Station. The breeder also refers to this variety as "a jewel of a lychee"
粉红桂味 a.k.a. Bosworth 3 (B3)
An Australian classic dating back to cuttings brought from Shekki (石歧,中山) in Southern China in 1932. Round, medium-sized fruit with an orange blush, a small seed and excellent flavour. Harvested in mid-late Dec and early Jan.
Kwai Mai Pink
Story Of Herbert Bosworth
Born in Ingham, North Queensland, Herbert Bosworth was the pioneer of commercial lychee growing in Australia. He had a collection of stock plants and gave them numbers, amongst which No.3 was a standout candidate for larger scale growing. It is therefore named "Bosworth 3", or "B3". B3 shares some similarities with Kuai Mai (桂味) but is not to be mixed up with it due to its distincitve taste.
Chompogo
Who am I?
Chompogo is a late-season lychee prized for its generous size and intensely sweet flavour. With juicy flesh, easy-peeling skin and a mild, low-acid taste, it offers a wonderfully refreshing eating experience. Its ability to hold well on the tree also allows us to harvest the fruit at its best, extending the enjoyment of fresh lychees into mid-late Jan.
Mysterious Identity
Little is known about its identity, except that it was introduced from China through Queenland grower Tibby Dixon's cultivar selection program in the early 2000s.
